Ascot Races

A Memory of Wokingham.

One of my lasting memories is watching the cars going to Ascot for the races in the 1950's, sitting on a seat in front of the Holt School on Reading Road, taking car numbers and admiring the fashions. The cars were amazing - Rolls Royce, Bentleys etc. There were no stretch limousines in those days and it was completely safe for a child of 10 to be on a main road by themselves .How times have changed and not necessarily for the better. Hello Veronica
I remember doing much the same when pony and traps as well as the posh cars would travel along the Binfield road through Bracknell. If you were a teenager in Wokingham in the 50's do you remember the 'Wokingham Jazz Club' were we teenagers would go jiving? jean Heather (nee Russell)
Hello Jean, I was too young to remember the "Wokingham Jazz Club" but 2 of my older sisters, Doreen and Jean probably would have. Unfortunately they are no longer with us. My Dad, in his memoirs, writes of watching the water cart in Ascot week settling the dust from the horses and carts. Veronica Lown.
I was at the Forest School in the sixties and recall boys throwing eggs, old apples, stones etc. at the trains heading for the Ascot races from the playground next to the Winnersh station.
Does anyone recall the jazz club down Finchampstead way called the Robinson Crusoe Club, it was run by Les, and was really a bar on a caravan site with a small lake containing prize winning carp. The jazz night was on a tuesday?. The musicians came down from London for a jam session, later famous names, you never knew who was going to be there. Another case of under-age drinking with my dad.
