Martins Swimming Pool.

Yes I remember Martins Pool and used to go there as a youngster. The lifeguard/swimming instructor was a Miss Sparks who was a really forthright lady. The caves were always cold and musty and the water always seemed cold

yes I remember the old caves I went to palmer school in the early 50s yes we went up rectory road down Milton road to martins pool

I also went to Palmer School in the early fifties,for some reason remember a Brenda Rose in my year from Rose Street, I lived in a Childrens Home called Oakfields up Barkham Rd and Murray House on Oxford Rd for some of the time.
Miss Newsome the headmistress,Miss Rose and the caretaker who used to put footprints on the school roof in the snow at christmas time.

hi Joyce I don't remember Brenda rose I had a sister carol and susan my mum and dad lived at 65 rose street my grandfather was the chimney sweep I think oakfields is now a home for the old people mind you I start my oap pension in march yes I do remember a miss rose

Yes i remember the sweet shop,my gran used to live in Cross Street,then moved to one of the houses opposite next to the ones that overhang the road,opposite the Ship. And yes i remember the Bromleys vaguely, was your sister Carol,my age,went on to train as a nurse,white blond hair,i also worked in Heelas in toy dept when i left school 40 hrs £1 a week lol.

hi Joyce did you live in the prefabs in cross street I remember the labour exchange in cross street I got my first passport there you must have been posh to live in the overhangers houses my sister carol is 67 she worked at boots my first job was with david grieg the supermarket I cant remember the wage we went to st crispins

Oakfields Childrens home became a home for the elderly in 1956,i was there at the time,they walked us round the corner to Murray house in Oxford Rd this is also became a home for the elderly.

I well remember the swimming pool and the dreaded caves where we had to change. I was at The Holt grammar school and I think we went there once a week. The caves were always cold and the water was always freezing too. I never did learn to swim as I was terrified of drowning, When moving from Crowthorne to Bristol in 1962, I worked on the swimming baths and finally learned to swim but would not go in the deep end as I could not tread water. I just swam backwards and forwards across the shallow end. My 3 boys could all swim like fish as my ex husband was a swimming instructor. I belong to "Memories of Crowthorne" as I was born there but never see any pics. of my time at Crowthorne C of E school so wondered if there were any of The Holt. A special friend was Pauline Buckley who lived in Finchampstead but we lost touch. It would have been about 1956 that I was at school in Wokingham. I later went to the college of further education in Reading Road. Can anyone tell me if that is still there please?
