More about this scene
Parallel to Stratford Road and to the south of it is one of the grid of streets that were laid out for the town from the 1840s, starting at the east and then expanding westward as land was released in the 1850s and 1860s. Further expansion came in the 1890s and in 1904, keeping pace with the expansion of the railway works as the major employer. Most of the buildings on the left survive, although the Victoria Hotel is now Zaks bar and music venue. All on the right was demolished and replaced by a shopping centre and an indoor market, The Agora, in the 1970s.
