More about this scene
This Cotswold stone hostelry takes its name from the nearby village of Amberley, which boasts a number of literary associations. Dinah Mulock lived here in Rose Cottage, and won considerable success with her novel John Halifax, Gentleman when it was published in 1857 under her pseudonym of Mrs Craik. The popular Victorian poet Sydney Thompson Dobell visited the village in 1853, and the author of Beau Geste, P C Wren, is buried in the churchyard.
