Photo Of High Road, Woodford Bridge.

A Memory of Woodford Bridge.

I have good reason to remember the above mention photo as I lived in the featured estate agents R. Cheeke & Co. from 1934 until I married in 1955 when I moved to 13, Gains Hill Road.
I have read some of the articles written by past residents of "The Bridge" as it was known but have not known any of them but I think perhaps that Frank Bedford may have been related to a member of "our gang" whose name was Cecil, also in the gang was Jimmy Walledge who lived next door to Cecil, Dicky Mason (my best mate) who lived in "The White Hart" pub, news agents Son Peter Watkins, my cousin George and one or two more whose names escape me at the moment.

I think I could write a book of my memories of "The Bridge" scrumping in Dr. Barnardos orchards was a good past time as was dodging Police Sergeant Dignan but he was a smashing guy who would give us a quick clip round the ear and send us on our way, next day he would be playing football with us on what was known as the police station green where the horse trough was as opposed to the village green between Roding Lane and Pump Hill under which was built the public air raid shelter.

Other memories include Dicky Mason and me putting the brush end of our Mothers broom sticks under our arm pits as we shot down the German planes that were having dog fights with our Spitfires.

As I write many, many more memories spring to mind but I don't want to become a bore so I'll leave it there for now and perhaps if anyone is interested, we can swap memorable experiences later. Norman.
