Maurice Redman

A Memory of Woodham Ferrers.

My uncle Maurice Redman built his own boathouse where he lived which was at Fenn Creek and he taught sailing. I remember going down there when I was a kid. He was a member of the village hall and designed the sports pavilion. Does anyone remember him? He sadly died in 1973 of a heart attack. He lived there all his adult life and was a well known character. I was sad to see his house was bulldozed to make way for the new developments. I would be interested to hear from anyone who knew him. Vic

I well remember Maurice Redman, having read about his design for the small cruising dinghy 'Barbel' in Practical Boat Owner magazine in 1967. I wrote to him, and he invited me up to Fenn Creek to see the boat that had been featured.
I went on to sail with Maurice many times, staying with him in his boathouse at Fenn Creek. We met up at other times too; the London Dinghy Conference at Crystal Palace, and on one occasion on the Norfolk Broads. We corresponded regularly and I still have all his letters, written between October 1967 and October 1973. I also have a couple of photographs of Maurice at Fenn Creek, as well as a complete set of the plans for 'Barbel' - though sadly I never got around to building one.
