My Formative Years In Woodhouse Eaves

A Memory of Woodhouse Eaves.

My name is Tony Walton and I have many fond memories of Woodhouse Eaves. My family moved to the village in 1942 when my father was stationed at Beaumanor. I had two brothers, Brian and Peter and initially we lived at 39 Victoria Road before moving to 11 Herrick Road when the new estate was built in the early fifties. Both Peter and I attended St. Paul's Infant school where we were taught by Mrs Baylis, Mrs Turland and finally by Mr. Hughes ('Taffy') the headmaster. My brothers and I all sang in the St. Paul's church choir when Mr Sills was the choirmaster and the Reverend Hargreaves was vicar. Other choir members included Harry Sills, Frank Greasley, Norman Taylor and David Hughes among others. After secondary education at Loughborough Grammar and Loughborough College Schools, both my brothers and I joined the R.A.F. I left the village in 1955 sadly never to return to live.
My parents left the village in 1961 on a posting to Cyprus and returned to live in Scarborough in 1964 where they eventually retired. I occasionally visit the village hoping to meet a friend from the past. To this end, a few years ago I was delighted to meet up with May Camm who served me with a drink in the Curzon Arms. May, who I believe married John (Sam) Kirk, was the elder sister to Tony Camm, my school friend. I would dearly love to contact or meet up with and share memories with some of my old village friends again, some of whose names I can recall :- Peter Leake, Alfred Stevens, Bren da, Julie And Bettine Barnard, Keith Tebbut, Tony Wiles, Wendy Wesley, Angela Hives, Dan and Arthur Sutton, Noel, John and Hadrian Newton, Jean Taylor, Tony and Arthur Camm, Derek (Digger) Taylor, John Green, Gerald and Jane Savory(?) Anne and Kieth Lawrence, John Best, Ken and Bob Greasley, Margaret Frisby, Malcolm Voase, Norman James, David, Brigitte and Judy Dobson .........and many more.
