Powis Street

A Memory of Woolwich.

I have a very vivid memory of my mum taking me to Powis Street in Woolwich to see the actress Elizabeth Seal opening either the Cuffs or Garrets store. I can't remember how old I was and I don't know why this is such a vivid memory but I know I was very young. I wonder if ayone else can remember this event?
In 1961 I had a Saturday job working in the hairdressers that was above Hinds the Jewellers in Powis Street. I earned 12/6d for a day (12.5p)
In 1971 I started work in Riverside House where the Education Welfare Service was based in the days of the Inner London Education Authority. I remember spending my lunchtimes walking around the shops in Powis Street and then the new Sainsburys Supermarket was built near where the buses all used to stop for their return journey to Bexleyheath and Dartford - the 96, the 122. I can remember getting all my weekly grocery shopping in there for about £5!
