More about this scene
These lovely almshouses of 1703 feature a striking life-size statue of a scarlet-coated Robert Berkeley in a niche on the chapel. A notable horticulturalist, a friend of diarist John Evelyn and a diplomat at The Hague, Berkeley bequeathed £2,000 to build and maintain the almshouses for 12 poor men and one woman, aged over 60.
