More about this scene
On the left is the Star Hotel, a former coaching inn previously known as the Star and Garter. Stagecoaches departed from here daily for all parts of the country until the railways put an end to them. Presumably, however, the Star was able to benefit from the railways too, with Foregate Street Station being just across the road. The Worcester-Hereford line opened in 1860, operated by the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway (fondly known as the Old Worse and Worse) until absorbed into the Great Western Railway in 1863.
