More about this scene
St John in Bedwardine, to give it its full name, is a 12th-century church of considerable interest, despite Victorian alterations. It was founded as a chapel for farm workers, replacing St Cuthbert's at nearby Lower Wick. The Parliamentarians used it in the Civil War and grooves on the window ledges are said to have been made by soldiers sharpening weapons.
