Already, The Cross is showing signs of congestion, but for the time being people still feel relaxed enough to linger in groups chatting - The Cross was traditionally a meeting place. Note how they have finally relinquished their hats, though the shops still hide from the sun below awnings, in contrast to the dignified, neo-classical facades of the two banks opposite.
