More about this scene
Situated near the south end of High Street, this is generally regarded as the finest civic building of its period in the country. The design of a local man, Thomas White, it was built 1721-23, replacing the original timber-framed Guildhall. The city's principal civic building, it houses the Assembly Room and Mayor's Parlour. The niched effigies on the facade are of Charles I, Charles II and Queen Anne. An enjoyable detail, not fully visible in this picture, is the demon's head nailed by its ears above the door, traditionally claimed to represent Oliver Cromwell.
