1940's Wortley

A Memory of Wortley.

The photograph shows the entry to Hell Mill Lane (sometimes called Riley Road) which runs along the valley of the Little Avon towards Ozleworth; to the right behind the trees is Wortley Farm, occupied in the 1940's by the Dawe family. The Dawe's had German POWs during WW2 helping on the farm. The house to the left was occupied by the Picton-Turberville family. The road leads on the right to Alderley and Hillesley, via the Broadbridge over the River Little Avon. To the left the road goes to Wotton-under-Edge via the "Three Corners" and "The Turnpike" (local names). The local historian Linley lived at Wortley House. I was born in the thatched cottages a couple of hundred yards towards Wotton, in the gardens of which the Roman villa remains were discovered. We shared a communal water tap fed by a spring in the side of Wortley Hill.
