The coming of the railways put York firmly on the tourist map. Though the lines were owned by the North Eastern, no less than five other companies had running powers into the city. For decades, the first indication for those travelling by train that York was just a few miles away was the sight of the lofty towers of the Minster rising majestically above the city.
