When the Earl of Leicester made the embankment in the 19th century, he also planted the vast line of Corsica pines to stabilise the dunes from Holkham to Wells. These dunes were banked up to stop sea encroachments, and this set of steps had to be erected to enable access to the beach.

This brings back vivid memories of growing up as the doctor's son. Our house not quite in this shot was on the left just here. The wing of the car could have been my father's an Austin Devon. The coxswain of the lifeboat is the tall, erect Dane, Theodore Neilsen (stood at the stern of the boat).
