More about this scene

Brownlow Cottage (left), surrounded by its white picket fence, housed the village store and post office, its windows graced with enamel lettering signs advertising Fry's chocolate and cocoa. On the opposite side of the road was the Onslow Arms inn, whose name honours the Onslow family. They had first come here from Shropshire 1642 in the person of Sir Richard Onslow; their family seat is here at Clandon Park.
