Farley Croft Wwii
A Memory of Westerham.
I am 86 but still remember the time at Farley Croft during WWII. My siblings and I were evacuated to Westerham in 1939. Around 1942/46 my sisters Rose, Sylvia and I were taken from the billet we were in and put in Farley Croft which was being used as a children's hospital. We were treated well. The nurses were so kind and taught us how to play card games. It had been a private house and there was still a big doll house that had electric light. We were sent from there to Ightham for convalescence. Then re-billeted but still in Westerham. I recall the the pathway behind Quebec house where I was told the lady ate snails. We also saw Winston Churchill's daughters giving a speech from a cart near the green. An air raid had us sitting in a shop near the green owned by two elderly ladies who had us put cotton wool in our ears and gave us a sweet to suck on. Apart from some bad experiences, it was a great place for a child from London. Wonderful memories of seeing bluebells and picking primroses in Hosey Woods, coming down a hill and picking watercress from a stream.
