More about this scene
The churchwarden awaits the arrival of the owners of the abbey (who at this date would have been the Stricklands), ready to escort them up to their private gallery in the church; the gallery was built in the early 17th century by the Cholmleys, who had owned the abbey since the Dissolution. The churchwarden stands by the Huntrods tomb, which is remarkable for its recording of the identical ages of the birth and death of the Huntrods couple.
