More about this scene

Victoria Square is in the centre of Widnes. The building on the left is the library; the Technical College is at the side of it. The church is St Paul's, Widnes' parish church, which opened in 1884 on land given in 1878 in the will of the late J G Leigh. The building on the far side of the square is the Widnes & Runcorn Co-operative Society offices and shops. The square, with the town hall (out of sight on the right), was the centre of civic occasions.

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I would love to hear any stories you may have of you or a family member or friend being a customer there, maybe winning the Singer of the Week competition, or seeing any photos you may have of the pub. I went to the School that is hiding behind the phone kiosk and the trees on the right of this photo and then later to the school in Spinney Avenue There was a sweet shop opposite the school just where that car is parked and there was a bus stop there going down Ditchfield Road. What I remember about the school, were the big trees in the playground and there was a big stone pillar thing that was on the ground ...see more
