December Smog Of 1952.

A Memory of Wimbledon.

The Broadway Wimbledon was brought to a near halt in December 1952 for four days. The Gaumont cinema in the back of this photo had to close on the third day because of the smog in the auditorium. I lived in Craven Gardens and the smog was down to less of a metre in front of your face and you could not see your feet.

I was born at foss road ,Tooting in the great smog of London Nov 1952,Foss Road was pulled down as slum clearance as we were living with grandparents the Stevens family they were rehomed at Melody Road, Wandsworth.Happy Memories for us as children 5 little girls playing at Clapham North council flats with other children.
Yes remember it well, for us kids it was great, people could hardly see us, so one can imagine the things we got up to. My lasting memory of the Great Smog ended up in Fulham Hospital coughing up BLACK TAR.
In 1970 I was diagnosed with C.O.P.D. so much for all the fun we had.
