More about this scene
The font's octagonal basin is probably late 12th-century, but its original decoration of semi-precious stones was stripped off in the Puritan times of the 17th century. It is supported by eight shafts of Purbeck marble. The carved, cone-shaped wooden lid seen here was a Victorian addition, and is now in storage.
