More about this scene
The Hospital of St Cross was founded by Bishop Henry de Blois in 1136 and is the oldest almshouse in England, originally built to house, clothe and feed 'thirteen poor impotent men, so reduced in strength as rarely or never to be able to raise themselves without the assistance of another'.
