The original hub of Witham was here, at Chipping Hill. As the town grew, its businesses drifted off to the main London-Colchester road. St Nicholas' was built c1330. The cottages were pulled down in 1935: the workmen apparently received a bonus for clearing the rubble in time for an important wedding.
