I remember swimming the width of the Severn and back again as a sea cadet at the age of 9 or 10, from the boathouse steps.
My father Archie Jewkes born in 1916, told us he and his brothers and friends all learnt to swim in the Severn. He said they used to swim across it and back regularly.
