More about this scene
Today the tramlines have gone, and the traffic is dreadful. Other than that, the ancient heart of St John's still looks very like this picture, its Georgian and Victorian facades mostly unspoilt - on the upper floors at least. Sadly, the charming enamel signs on the left, advertising Rowntree's and Cadbury's chocolate, have long since gone.
