I was born in 1933. I am the only son of Irvine Reed Jones whose father had the butchers shop in Pontlottyn about that time. My cousin, Howard Jones (father Fred Jones), owned the DIY/hardware shop in Pontlottyn until recently. I believe he has now retired and lives in Bargoed. If there is anyone out there who knows him I would be grateful to know. Fred and Irvine Jones had brothers Hedley, Arnold and ...see more
I have many fond memories of Pontllotyn Cinema, it was a very big part of most of my childhood and teen years. I remember Mrs Jones with the torch, Mrs Lewis & my own Nan, Mrs Jones from Duffryn St. My nan's job was to bring around the refeshment at the interlude of the film, which always had a second part, sometimes really long films may have had a part 3. On Christmas time the kids would line up ...see more
I lived on Farm Road behind the police station facing the court house. There were so many lovely old buildings on the Square that I remember. The most prominent one for me was the sweet shop, it had such beautiful glass cabinetry and brass foot rails. Loved that shop. The other was the Chemist on the corner opposite the butchers, it was full of old oak fixtures and huge glass jars. I saw the old ...see more

Some names may help, older ones Frances, Elizabeth, Emlyn, Stephen, William, then Margaret, Maureen, Theresa, Winifred. Anything you can remember will be helpfil as most of them she has never found. The last three were in homes together. Hope you can help.

You mention the State Cinema run by the Price family, and then there was the newsagent, cafe, gents hairdresser, butcher etc. all around the area called the Square. There was several chapels, Church, The Police Station & Court, Perrys Shop and the infants school plus the senior school headmaster Mr Issac. There is lot more I could mention about Pontlottyn and surrounding villages. I lived in Reform Street From 1939 - 1961. I would be interested to hear from anyone of that era.
I have great memories of Pontlottyn cinema, my mam didn't have much money but she always managed to give us sixpence evrey Friday to go to the cinema. I remember Mrs Jones coming around with her torch, if we so much as sneezed the light would be straight on us with a warning that if we didn't keep quiet we'd be out. And there was a few times we were put out. She later worked in Pontlottyn toilets and when we ...see more
My Nan Katherine Walters used to live in Sodom with her children Aunty Violet, Billy (my dad) and Aunty Betty. My Grandad Thomas Walters was killed in the Pit at a young age and she was left to bring up the children on her own. I Tanya Walters was born in 1951, we used to live in King Street, Pontlottyn and I remember walking from Pontlottyn past the cinder tip to my Nan's in Sodom. The cinder tip used to scare me because ...see more
Hi there, I will never forget the State Cinema in Pontlottyn, up to about 1951 I used to line up about 7pm on a Saturday evening with my mother, my aunt (her sister) and my cousin for our evening's entertainment. Wow, on the front of the building I recall the sign "Palace of Varieties". The kids in Pontlottyn School used to joke that the varieties were the rats, mice and fleas that inhabited the premises. My ...see more
