More about this scene
The site now occupied by this ruined castle was first fortified over 2,000 years ago by the ancient Britons. Built as one of a series defending the English border from Welsh attack, the castle had already fallen into disrepair by the 1600s, when it was refortified during the Civil War. After changing hands a couple of times during that war, it was finally slighted in 1645.
