Budleigh Salterton stands near the mouth of the Otter, which is hidden round the headland on the right. It was once a busy little port exporting salt (from which the town takes its name) and wool, but the estuary became silted up in the 15th century.

My grandfather was Chief Constable of Dorset from 1925 - 1956. When he retired my grandparents bought a house called either Ravensthorpe or Ravenscroft (it was a long time ago and I can't remember for sure!)in Victoria Place. Every year from 1957 when I was four till 1963 we would come here and stay for a couple of weeks for our summer holiday. I used to live in #1 when I was about 6 years old and have memories of climbing out of a window and sitting on the roof and looking out to sea. I also used to cycle off to school each day along this street. My father was in the Devon Constabulary and so we moved around a bit. My memory of Budleigh Salterton is spending a couple of months or so at a childrens convalescent home in the spring/early summer of 1955. I revisited the town a few years back to find that the old childrens home building is now a hotel and named Tidwell Manor.
