This fine view along Budleigh's strand looks towards the mouth of the River Otter and the bulbous cliff top of Otterton Ledge. Apart from some infilling by more houses, this scene remains relatively unchanged. Budleigh's sea front is mostly a Victorian construction, for a century earlier green meadows sloped down to the edge of the seashore.

My grandfather was Chief Constable of Dorset from 1925 - 1956. When he retired my grandparents bought a house called either Ravensthorpe or Ravenscroft (it was a long time ago and I can't remember for sure!)in Victoria Place. Every year from 1957 when I was four till 1963 we would come here and stay for a couple of weeks for our summer holiday. I used to live in #1 when I was about 6 years old and have memories of climbing out of a window and sitting on the roof and looking out to sea. I also used to cycle off to school each day along this street. My father was in the Devon Constabulary and so we moved around a bit. My memory of Budleigh Salterton is spending a couple of months or so at a childrens convalescent home in the spring/early summer of 1955. I revisited the town a few years back to find that the old childrens home building is now a hotel and named Tidwell Manor.
