In the 1960s and 70s the Borough Council, aided and abetted by Derbyshire County Council, planned to demolish the Market Hall, New Square and The Shambles and sweep away the open market so that the area could be redeveloped. The plan was for a covered retail area embracing 80 shops topped off with an unsightly five-storey office block.
