More about this scene
The Guild of St. Mary was founded in 1218 to protect privileges granted to Chesterfield by King John. It grew to become a powerful organisation within the town, and there was intense rivalry between wealthy local families for membership. One of the Guild's rules was: 'Each brother shall bequeath in his will, towards masses for the souls of his brethren, twelve pence out of every pound of his chattels; but he need not bequeath more than forty shillings in all'.
