Chesterfield, The Royal Oak, Oldest Inn c.1960

More about this scene
The Royal Oak is the town's oldest inn. Another old inn, the Peacock, was already scheduled for demolition when it caught fire in February 1974. Beneath the Victorian frontage was discovered a timber-framed building - the Peacock was far older than first thought. The fight against the wholesale demolition of the area lasted long enough for the Peacock to be saved and it is now the tourist information and heritage centre.
