More about this scene
Pronounced 'Eem', this is 'the plague village'. In the 17th century bubonic plague was discovered in the village, believed to have arrived in a consignment of cloth from London. Under the leadership of their vicar William Mompesson, the villagers isolated themselves, thus containing the spread of this killer disease. Over 80% of the villagers perished, including Mompesson's wife. Note the children at play: all wearing hats.
