More about this scene
Like other wool towns in the Cotswolds, such as Stroud, Painswick and Woodchester, Fairford has a 'Rack Hill'. This name recalls the place where cloth was stretched out to dry after dyeing or fulling. John Keble, writer of The Christian Year and a leading light in the Oxford Movement, was born in Fairford in 1792, and the American artist Edwin Austin Abbey came to live in the town in 1878.
