Fowey's most famous son, the writer Quiller Couch, relished the bustle and colour of Fowey's August regatta, claiming there could be no better place to enjoy the bracing sea air. As the yachts tacked to and fro, great vessels slid by with their cargoes of china clay, bound for Canada and the Continent.
