More about this scene
The top of the tower of this 13th-century church is five hundred feet above sea level, and was used as a lookout point in both world wars. An earlier medieval tower was destroyed in a storm in 1637. The building was the scene of an epic battle involving the local militia and the Hawkhurst gang of smugglers in 1747.
