Sawbridgeworth, Bell Street c.1965

More about this scene
Leading from the High Street to the Square, Bell Street is lined with shops and public houses. However, if the visitor looks at the upper storeys or, if opportunity presents itself, at the rear elevation of the buildings, they give the clues to their origins. Some of the buildings are a century older than their Georgian frontages, and one is reputed to be haunted by two women dressed in Romany costume. The photograph shows Bell Street as a quiet back street in a small market town with only one car and a solitary cyclist - a far cry from the busy shopping centre of today.
