More about this scene

This stream, the Lode Pit Beck, flows off the moor into the Aire at Shipley. A former drovers' track took trade over the hills to Ilkley and Otley. At the top of the glen a pioneer amusement park was established from 1887, when the switchback railway from the Saltaire Exhibition was moved up the hill. This was joined by an 'aerial flight' in 1889 and a toboggan run in 1897. The whole area became a paradise for thousands of West Yorkshire mill workers. The cable tramway of 1895 still operates.

Small Town Outlook In Shipley.
Grew up in Moorhead Shipley and what even struck me then was the snobby and small town attitude of some of the residents! I had a Jewish father and a socialist non-believer mother who were both brought up in the area. I was most definitely not welcome to play with some of my so called friends with excuses been made "oh sorry Christine is baking today!!! " As if!! Northcliffe County Secondary School 1965
Does anyone remember or attended Northcliffe County Secondary School in Shipley during the early 60's. I can remember the Headmaster being Mr Bartholemew. Our RI teacher was Mr Scott, Geography teacher Mrs Fearnley, who was always nipping out of classes to have a smoke! I can also remember our PE teacher Mrs Holdsworth. Life At The Pub In Shipley, West Riding Yorkshire.
My mother, father and I moved into an old Victorian public house in Shipley. Life was different living in a pub and travelling miles to school in Bradford.

Hammonds Sauce Works Brass Band
For some reason my dad Ernest Carter around 1952/53 got all us Carter kids joined into the Hammond Sauce Works Brass band in SHIPLEY....DAD was a member of the BRADFORD City brass band.  We'd go for practice Tuesday and Thursdays each week, we did this for many years till about 1963 when we kids got sick of the running around, me 20 yo by then and playing for THE DUNEDIN PLAYERS all around BRADFORD. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
