Tiverton, The Canal c.1955

More about this scene
Barges had continued to carry limestone from a quarry at Westleigh to lime kilns in Tiverton Basin. This trade lasted until 1924, when the whole canal was closed but never infilled. In 1971, Devon council took over the canal from British Waterways and have retained it as a leisure amenity ever since.
