More about this scene
At the centre of the junction is the fine war memorial cenotaph designed by Gilbert Ledward in October 1921 and unveiled by Lord Treowen, Lord Lieutenant of the county. A Tesco supermarket now stands on the right where Morgan & Co and M H Maxwell's tobacconist and confectionery businesses can be seen in this photograph. Behind the mini-van on the left, the Butchers Arms had replaced a much older half- timbered building damaged extensively by fire in 1939.
