Aldershot, High Street 1938

More about this scene
A few changes have taken place in the seven years since the photograph 83730 (above) was taken. The most notable is the building of the Ritz Cinema next to the Empire, and the street certainly is a lot busier than in the earlier view. The shops on the right testify to the wide range of services available at the time: Stephens and Johnson, ironmongers; Bateman, forage contractor; Flights Military Outfitters; the Magpie, sweets and cigarettes; Orange, chemist and optician; and Salter's sports shop. Note, too, the shops' different architectural styles, although they all date from the last quarter of the 19th century.
