More about this scene
Lansdowne House, the elegant building on the left, was home to local doctors for about 100 years. Jane Austen came with Miss Beckford of Chawton House to visit Dr Newnham here in 1811. Afterwards she described him as 'her Doctor so dread Whose name it was Newnham'. She herself consulted Dr William Curtis of 4 High Street.
