More about this scene

East Street used to lead from the Common Acre past a number of big houses. On the right, three dormers mark the roof of the Manse to the Congregational Church, built in 1780. In foreground right, Beckett House, now York House, retains its fine-jointed Georgian brickwork. Russell House, with the lamp, and Royston House are probably pre-Civil War, but were re-faced by Beales in 1887. The houses on the left were removed in the 1960s to make room for Eastern Avenue and Black Swan Yard car park.

Swimming Pool, Andover Grammar School
I attended Andover Grammar School from 1952 until 1956 and must admit that the swimming pool was my favorite part of the school. I have fond memories of the friends I made there, a lot of whom I am still in touch with. Andover Town Hockey Club
I remember arriving at Andover railway station in 1950 and asking how I could get to RAF Amport where I was to spend the next 18 months or so doing my National Service. Eventually an old pre-war coach turned up and we chugged our way through country lanes ocassionly stopping to drop off elderly ladies and waiting while the driver helped them carry their shopping into their houses.. Swimming Pools In Andover
I well remember the open air swimming pool where we used to go for swimming lessons from Norman Gate primary school as well as the open air pool at the Grammar School featured in one of your photos. However my first experience of swimming was in the River Anton. Mardi Gras
During the late 50's and early 60s, I remember that during Carnival Week there was always a Mardi Gras night. There was a dance floor in front of the Guildhall and many fairground stalls. I always remember being weighed at one of these stalls on a chair contraption. The main activity was throwing confetti at one another and trying to stuff it down strangers necks!! When I got home my mother would not let me in the house until I had undressed at the backdoor and got rid of all the confetti.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
