More about this scene
In the south-west corner of the Garden of Remembrance, the Norman Gate gives access from the High Street. The west door of the old Saxon/Norman church, it was moved to its present position in 1845 while the new church was being built. Here it is seen before the garden was cleared in 1947. The 1873 Ordnance Survey map showed a fire engine house, belonging to the Sun Insurance Company, behind the building on the right.
