More about this scene
Ellen & Son, estate agents, is where Gilbert & Heath opened Heath's Bank by 1807. Opposite was Heath's Brewery, started by Charles Heath in 1778, shortly before coaching reached its peak. Coaching sharply declined after 1845 when the railway reached the edge of the town. An army vehicle is in the forecourt of today's Hogshead pub, then Charles Heath's residence. Next door was William Hawkins Heath's house, which would be demolished in 1928 to make way for the Savoy cinema designed by Freddie Henshaw.
