The earliest scheme for a non-tidal basin at Avonmouth capable of taking vessels too large to reach Bristol was a £1.5 million project promoted in 1852. Alas, it got nowhere, but work did begin in 1868 on a single basin. After running into financial difficulties on several occasions, it eventually opened in 1877. While this was going on a rival scheme was being promoted at Portishead.

Bocm Mill &Granary
Hi.The BOCM in Avonmouth was the first shift work job I had.I was a packer in the P&P (Pig and Poultry) filling 56lb bags and sending them up conveyors to the granary which was a 7 floor wooden building in line with 3 different mills. The conveyors from the mills sent all the different products of animal feed (70lb bags for cattle feed). After a year or so transferred to the granary to become a loader which ...see more

Avonmouth Docks And Bocm Silcocks
In 1977 I finished a Teacher Training Course at Redland College in Bristol. I was in need of a temporary job and was to find one in Avonmouth Docks where BOCM Silcocks (who had produced animal feed from grain and molasses since the 1930's) had an urgent need to demolish the whole site to avoid paying rates on the site. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
