Bournebridge Gardens

A Memory of Barkingside.

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could help me....I have my dad's old bible and he'd written his address inside the front cover:
4 bournebridge gardens
Barkingside
Ilford
Essex
Have tried finding it but, to no avail.
I know he lived there in 1954, can anyone let me know whereabouts it was and what happened to it?!
Thanks in advance

Dear Susan,
I was quite intrigued by your query because I used to live near Barkingside and know a bit about local history but I'd never heard of Bournebridge Gardens and could not find it on any modern maps or by searching the internet. Luckily though I have an old A to Z map from about 1953 which covers most of Greater London and to my surprise there it was listed in the index! Once I found it on the map I realized why it's no longer there. This was a small estate of 'prefabs' which were quickly built and intended as temporary housing for some of the many left homeless in the East End of London after the Second World War. Some of these prefabs survived long after the war though because they were well constructed and I believe popular with residents who given a choice maybe preferred them to living in tower blocks.
In this small estate the prefab units had been arranged in a triangular grid with Elmbridge Road to the east and Forest Road to the south and intersected by pathways which were named and included Bournebridge Gardens. Now I know exactly where it was I remember the estate quite well as would anyone who travelled down Forest Road up until the 1970s or 1980s which I think is when the area was eventually levelled.
Here is an excellent article about the estate which I found after adjusting my search to include the word prefabs:

Kind regards,
