I was born in Barrow in 1954, later living in Dalton and Ulverston up to 1970. Many happy memories of a trip to the Ritz Cinema, but the one that stood out was Mutiny On The Bounty made in 1962 starring Marlon Brando & Trevor Howard. Probably my first visit. Also Abbey Road always appeared a grand entrance to the town a wide road and trees either side.
I'm looking for my relatives, the Westwood family; Barbara, Brian, Arthur. One of them or all of them lived on 1 Vulcan Road, in Barrow. I don't have any more details but I'm desperate to make contact. I would be grateful for any information regarding this family.
My late Father in Law Joeseph Edgar was a Fireman on the trains but moved away to Manchester around 1954. He lived in School Street Barrow when married around the period of 1946. Would anyone know of him or his family please..!
Can anyone please let me know when these cottages (huts) were distroyed and what is in their place now. My husband's Grandfather was born in one of them in 1877 and his birth was registered as born in 64 Brick Cottages. PatriciaMartin17@msn.com
My dad met my mam, who lived in Romney Road, when he played football for Barrow FC. They were married on 31st of July 1947 at St James' Church. My mam and dad moved to Gateshead where my dad played for Gateshed FC until 1953. I was born in 1948 and have many memories of holidays spent in Barrow, where some of my mam's family still live.
My father, Archibald Brown Mckinlay, came to Barrow in 1900 with his parents, Samuel Laing Brown Mckinlay and Margaret Mckinlay. They lived at 22 Duncan Street, Barrow.
Samuel was born in Greenock, Scotland and came to Barrow in 1881 to work in the shipyard. He lodged with the Hutchinson family 43 St Vincent Street.

Apparently, there was housing built for ship-building families along Duke Street. These were heavily damaged by bombing raids in the Second World War we hear, and presumed demolished. I am wondering about any info on these dwellings. My paternal grandmother's ancestors lived in them in 1871 for sure, at 269 Duke Street, as noted in the census. They were the Siddaway family, sometimes spelled with one 'd'. bryan45777@gmail.com (I'm over in the States).
I have recently discovered that my grandfather Charles Alexander Parsons Hall was born illegitimately to Sarah Hall in Barrow in Furness c. 1885. Sarah's father George Hall was a clog maker employing two men at Anson Street in 1881. George was born in Stockport then worked in the Birmingham area before arriving in Barrow. My grandfather married in Salford and lived there the rest of his life. I would love to know where ...see more
Born at the Risedale Maternity Home in 1933 we first lived in James Street. I think it was 1937 when we moved to Clevelands Avenue in the new Beacon Hill estate. Barrow was bombed in May 1941 but it was the older part of the town that suffered the most damage. I recall, as a boy, going round the streets looking for shrapnel from the AA guns I suppose. My grandfather was Manager of the District Bank, Barrow-In-Furness during the 1950's and 1960's. Please can somebody confirm if there was only one branch, as I have no idea of the address.
