More about this scene
Basildon's market opened on 6 September 1958. The caravan on the left is the Basildon School of Motoring's mobile office; the one on the right is a fish stall, offering skate, crabs, live eels and 'new season Scotch kippers - full of oil'. The ladies' calf-length, wide-collared hats are typical of the era.
